Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment involves the removal of the pulp (nerves and blood vessels) from the inside of the inflamed, infected or dead tooth in order to prevent it from becoming a source of continuing infection.

What does root canal treatment involve?

By the time you need a root canal, it’s too late to save the life of the tooth because it’s already infected and dying. You can still maintain function after a root canal, which is why your dentist might want to save a tooth already considered "dead."

What might I experience after a root canal treatment?

Slight sensitivity or a mild ache between visits and for a short period after completion of root canal treatment is not uncommon. This discomfort can be managed with medication that your dentist will recommend or prescribe for you.

It is often recommended that when a tooth has received root canal treatment, that it be restored with a full crown to preserve the structural integrity of the tooth and to help ensure that the tooth can provide many years of service.
